What is expected for each development phase from the basic service teams?
Please note! Plan extra effort for the Base4NFDI requirements when applying for a phase, in terms of deliverables and events to attend – familiarise yourself below to plan and allocate appropriate resources per phase.

Events and outreach
The purpose of the one-year Initialisation phase is to set up a working prototype for a basic service that is relevant to most NFDI consortia and has the potential to supplement, extend or unify existing consortia services. It gives you the opportunity to get in touch with other NFDI consortia and gather their requirements as well as to understand user personas and their use cases. It also allows you to perform a more in-depth exploration of the existing service landscape and consolidate the position of your basic service in it, evaluate potential solutions further, set up your service design and continue to define the benefits of your prospective service. First user interactions and tests help you to confirm or adjust the design and estimate training and documentation needs. The initialisation phase is also the starting point for community engagement and promoting your service in different kinds of outreach activities.

During the two-year Integration Phase, the service will be further developed into a mature and functional service that will have been adopted by an initial group of organisations and institutions for everyday work. At the end of the phase, the services quality and user-friendliness are tested and documented. All necessary documentation, support offers, and training materials are available. The conditions for using the service are described along with its capabilities and limitations. There is a coordinated process for feedback and future improvements. Any resources required to operate the service have been quantified, and a capable institution has committed to providing the service on a long-term basis. The service is shown to be interoperable with other services and systems. This also includes the integration of the service into the NFDI portfolio. The basic prerequisites for a future federation of the service within the EOSC have been established.

The two-year Ramp-Up Phase is dedicated to all necessary steps and prerequisites for rolling out the service for widespread use in a sustainable and scalable manner. At the end of the phase, the service has been made compliant with relevant legal regulations, in the first place with GDPR. Any required security, backup, and protection measures are in place to ensure integrity and availability of both service and data. There is a business model that defines the organisational form of the service operation, quantifies the costs of its provision and documents the necessary long-term financing scheme. Interoperability has been further advanced to make the service an integral part of the NFDI service portfolio and enable it for use in larger contexts, especially for federating within EOSC.
